Before you register online
The processes for your appointment, the success and timeliness of approval of applications very much depend on the information that you provide us. Therefore, the more complete, current and comprehensive you are regarding your CV and preferences, the better!

A few points to be aware of:
English language proficiency
  • For employment at any level of appointment, you must first satisfy the requirements of the English language skills registration standard.
  • Unless you completed your secondary education AND your basic medical degree in English in Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America*, you must have passed an approved English test in the past two (2) years.
  • The only approved tests are the IELTS, OET, PLAB and NZREX.
  • If your English test was completed more than 2 years ago, you must have maintained employment and registration in one of the countries listed above* to avoid having to sit another test.
Securing appointment in Australia
  • Employers in Australia appoint those candidates who best meet the requirements for the position.
  • However, if an Australian and an International Medical Graduate with equivalent qualifications, training and experience apply for the same job, the job will be offered to the Australian applicant first – I am sure the same policy applies where you are working now.
  • Employers receive many more applications than they need, especially for junior, non-specialist positions, and preference is given to International Medical Graduates with recent clinical experience in health systems similar to Australia.
Your curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A well-written and informative CV will greatly enhance your chances of being selected for an interview.
  • Only include qualifications that are awarded by competitive examination or by continual assessment following an authorised curriculum.
  • When writing about employment/practice history, avoid writing too much about the hospital - write about your responsibilities and duties.
  • Present your previous positions in reverse chronological order – start with the most recent position first.
  • Wherever possible, you should provide details of the size and casemix of your current workload, and your clinical and procedural skills. Let the employer know what you are capable of independently, or with assistance and supervision.
  • Don't forget to use the ‘spell-check’ function on your computer!
  • You can download a copy of our CV template here.
References
  • We will not contact your nominated referees until we have discussed this with you. Please be sure that your referees are aware that they will be contacted. This is an instance that demonstrates it is better not to be registered with multiple recruitment agencies. Your referees will soon become irritated if they are approached over and over for references.
  • Referees must be able to comment on your performance from direct association in a paid position in a setting similar to the position you are seeking, preferably during your last employed position.
  • Registration usually requires the provision of two (2) professional references. We routinely request the name and contact details of at least three (3) referees, in case we are unable to reach any of them due to vacation leave, etc.
  • We use specific forms for obtaining references. Unfortunately, conventional letters of reference seldom address all the points covered in our forms.
  • Referees are required to be supervisors in the case of junior doctors, and at least colleagues with similar qualifications who have practised with the applicant at consultant level, for more senior appointments.
  • Recency of association of the referee with you is vital.
    • Where an applicant is currently working in a clinical setting, references must be obtained from the current employer and the immediate previous clinical employer.
    • Where an applicant is not currently working in a clinical setting, a reference must be obtained from the immediate previous clinical employer and the clinical employer prior to the immediate previous.
    • Where an applicant has only worked in one clinical setting, both references must be obtained from that particular employer.
  • Clinicians who provided supervision during clinical attachments are not suitably qualified to provide adequate references.
  • Referees should not be related or be family members of the applicant.
  • The following information about referees should be provided in your current CV:
    • Name
    • Position/Title
    • Relationship to you
    • Organisation/Hospital
    • Address
    • Phone
    • Fax
    • E-mail

  • You are engaged to be married or have a long term partner who will be travelling with you to Australia

  • If your partner is pregnant
  • You are looking to work in Australia for only 1-2 years
